Logan

Hi my name is Logan, I am 7 years old and I have Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).  I was diagnosed with SMA at 28 months old.  I use a electric wheelchair and a powered standing dani. I am a very sociable and high spirited boy and I just want to have fun. I enjoy spending time with my older brother Dylan, but I have to admit, that we do have our moments.  My mom (Terri) and dad (Stan) are very supportive of me and the things that I want to do in life.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy «

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a motor neuron disease. The motor neurons affect the voluntary muscles that are used for activities such as crawling, walking, head and neck control, and swallowing. It is a relatively common "rare disorder": approximately 1 in 6000 babies born are affected, and about 1 in 40 people are genetic carriers. SMA affects muscles throughout the body, although the proximal muscles (those closest to the trunk of one’s body - i.e. shoulders, hips, and back) are often most severely affected. Weakness in the legs is generally greater than in the arms. Sometimes feeding and swallowing can be affected. Involvement of respiratory muscles (muscles involved in breathing and coughing) can lead to an increased tendency for pneumonia and other lung problems. Sensation and the ability to feel are not affected. Intellectual activity is normal and it is often observed that patients with SMA are unusually bright and sociable. Patients are generally grouped into one of four categories, based on certain key motor function milestones.

The San Francisco Giants Base Ball Team will be hosting the second annual Logans' Freedom Ride benefit event on Wednesday, August 6, 2008, at Apartment 24 nightclub in San. Francisco. Several Giants members will be in attendance and will also serve as guest bartenders. The event will include a silent auction and raffle, with proceeds benefiting the Logans Freedom Ride fund and the Familys of Spinal Musuclar Atrophy Foundation. Proceeds from this year's event will aid in repairs to our home in order to make it wheelchair accessible and a portion of the funds will also be donated directly to the FSMA Foundation in hopes to find a cure. Please check in for any updates regarding this wonderful event and the hope they are bringing to our family and other families with children who have been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Our Family wanted to let everyone know that we have our Wheelchair Accessible Van. It is a Silver 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan. Logan Loves it. It has made our lives so much better and Logan can be so independent. We could not have done this without everyone who helped, and our family would like to say thank you again to everyone who had a part in this in some way.
Love Stan, Terri, Dylan and Logan

Stan and I just had a meeting about purchasing a Wheelchair accessible Van. The purchase is going to be alot more than we planned. We will not have any extra money to fix the house to meet Logans needs. Any proceeds still coming in will still be going towards the purchase of the Van. Thank you to everyone for the help we are receiving.

We would also like to mention that Vanessa Leture, a senior at Orono High School presented a check to Logan on behalf of her parent's company, Leture's Paving. Venessa is challenging all teens to encourage their parents who own companies or work at companies to donate to help Logan. Venessa is developing her own program of "Save A Teen, Be A Friend." Teenagers need to speak up and reach out to a troubles teen, help tutor another peer, be just a friend and listen and know when to say, that is not a good idea. We hope others will follow in her footsteps and "Save A Teen, Be A Friend." Good Luck Venessa, you are very bright and brilliant young lady! The Severance's

Our family would like to thank everyone for their part in making Logan's Freedom Ride Benefit Dinner a huge success. Our family will not forget the support we recieved that night. Special thanks to Kim Severance (Sister-in-law)for starting this whole fundraising project, which has been a success in a short period of time. Special thanks to Mr. Tom Valley and staff for providing a wonderful meal. Thanks to Rev. Carlson who made the live auction alot of fun for everyone. Thanks to Mike Dow in providing the Music.
When we started this fundraiser in the spring, we never thought that we would raise so much money so fast. A special thanks to Ben & Erika Potenziano, (Ben is the Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Giants and a very close family friend), Devon Fox and the SF Giants Baseball Team. In August, they did a big fundraiser at the Dolce Dance Club in San Francisco. They had the team players bartend the event, which made it a huge success and fun for everyone. We want to give a special thanks to Barry Zito and Gardner/Jones for their more then generous donations. Thank you Marisa Veroneau, one of Potenziano’s colleagues who helped in organizing the event. Marisa also grew up in Maine, a Portland native who attended Catherine McAuley High School. She now lives in San Francisco and works for FSN Bay Area, the television home of the San Francisco Giants. She posted pictures and a very nice write up in the Maine Today (Portland Press Harold/Maine Sunday Telegram) http://my.mainetoday.com:80/story.html?ID=1676

With all these fundraisers and the donations people have made to us, we have now met our goal and are in the process of looking into buying a van. We will post as soon as we purchase it. Any extra money will be going towards renovating our home in helping Logan with his needs. Again, Thank You All for your support in helping our family. Stan, Terri, Dylan and Logan Severance
